Q1-I understood of censorship before the
discussion is that a government control public communication in society. For
example, a government controls speech, book, music, art, television, movie, and
radio. Moreover, I thought a totalitarian government is a typical example of
censorship. Because a totalitarian government is one that tries to control
every aspect of life: how people spend every minute of their time even in
private, who they can associate with, what they are allowed to say.
Totalitarian government even tries to control what people think, and what they
believe. Likewise, George Orwell’s ‘1984’ show a totalitarian. For example,
‘BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU’ means that the government is watching the citizen
in ‘1984’. In
addition, I thought that censorship has strength and weaknesses. In strength
part, if a government controls cigarette and alcohol, citizen will be
protected. In weaknesses part, each person has his or her own opinion; however,
a government does not want to citizen talk about harmful and sensitive story to
the government. Thus, sometimes, censorship is an exercise in power. A
government is not trying to control people’s mind for some other purpose. A
government just wants to exercise total power over people’s minds.
Q2-I did not change my idea about
censorship through the in class discussion. Because the discussion was similar
with my idea. However, I add some idea about censorship. I just thought social
censorship; however, I started think about individual censorship like family
censorship.
