Summary of discussion

In the world, there are various characters. Each person has different characters. Today, my G12 English class took time to discussion our own characters and friends’ characters. Each student described their own character and friends’ characters. After that, the students gave a feedback to their friends.

Nguyen said that he is traditional because he prefers old music rather than rap or pop. In addition, he is responsible because he always tries to do his best when he starts doing something. Almost of all the group students said that he is serious and hard-worker, but he is kind. Thus, the students said that he should be relaxed.

Huong said that she is caring because she is willing to help the other. In addition, she said that she is stupid; however, all of the students disagree it. She has stress from her cousins, four, five years old, and ten months old. However, I am sure if she shows her power to the cousins, they will be listen to the her advise. I worked at the day care centre twice and babysitting, so I know children. Thus, I gave some examples to her. If she wants to know about children, I can give some information. In my thinking, she is very kind because she helped me when I asked her about the class work.

Thomas said that he enjoy exercising and is serious, and boring. All students agreed about exercising, but they disagreed that he is boring. He worried about people are not funny about my joke, and his voice make serious because his voice is deep. However, he has ability to attention people. He has a deep voice. It makes people to attention. Thus, he does not need to make people funny. People have a different character.

Brian said that he is sleepy and unsure. He likes to stay home and relax more than go outside. The students said that if he goes to relax vacation, he would enjoy. In addition, one of student said that he is cut because of his cheek.

Serena said that she is a free person and her family also is free. She said that sometimes her family decides travel on impulse. All most of student said that she is out-going and exciting. She is interesting in everything such as Korean entertainment.   In addition, the students noticed that Serena and Clair is very close friend each other.

Clair said that she is a free and wire person. She mentioned that she is not normal, so people do not understand her thinking. However, Serena always understand her. In addition, She said that she is thinking about funny story during the class. Thus, she burst out laughing during the class, so she thought that people would think that she is wire. However, all of the students said that she is not wire. She is just funny and happy.

In conclusion, students who are taking G12 English class described their own character and listened their friends’ description. The student got to know each other more than before. In addition, the students gave feedback to their friends. Therefore, today’s discussion makes the student to be on intimate terms.

‘Life of pi’ is a fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel published in 2001. The novel has sold more than then million copies worldwide. In addition, in 2012, the novel was adapted into a theatrical feature film directed by Ang Lee with a screenplay by David Magee. Thus, I was interested in the novel and movie. When my G12 English class chose the novel, I was glad about it. Today, I watched ‘life of pi’ movie in my English class after discussion of chapter one of ‘life of pi’ novel. I realized several perceptions of the story, my mind, and two questions for my friends to answer while watching the movie.
First of all, I noticed ‘life of pi’ movie has several means. The story of movie mentioned religion, culture, survival, death, family, friend, and communication with animals. The reason why the movie mentions those is that those were a movie for action of Pi’s survival. Death of Pi’s family helps to survive him on the ocean by making strong heart. Pi had religions, which are Hindu and Christian. On the ocean, he said and prayed to god of Hindu and Christian. Moreover, he had a friend who is a tiger named Richard Parker. Even though Pi could not communicate with Parker like human and there was problem between human and animal at the beginning, he communicated with Parker through feeling. Parker was Pi’s friend on the ocean.
Second, the movie was brought to my mind that mind of people according the way of thinking. Some doctors said that the main cause why people usually die in uninhabited island is mental problem. They said people die because of mental problem before the stubbing. There is story about mind of people: Saint Wonhyo who is a famous journey the Korean Buddhist 1,300 years ago has a famous story. “Legend has it that he and fellow spiritual seeker Uisang, took shelter from a storm in an old tomb they thought was a cave. During the night Wonhyo became thirsty and began searching on the ground for a gourd of water. He found one and picked it up and drank deeply from it. The water was sweet and refreshing and he slept deeply until dawn. In the morning he discovered that the vessel he had drunk from was not a gourd but a human skull. It was not filled with sweet, clean water but instead was full of dirty rainwater, rotting meat and maggots. He was so revolted by what he had drank that he fell on his knees and vomited” (3WM, 2011). Likewise, Pi survived on the ocean for a long time. (There is more story about Wonhyo: http://thethreewisemonkeys.com/2012/09/03/expats-begin-trek-across-peninsula-on-second-wonhyo-pilgrimage/)
Third, I have two questions to my friends to answer. One of question is that “What do you think how Pi could survive on the ocean?” Other question is that “Do you believe that Pi stayed with tiger named Richard Parker on the same boat for a long time in realistic?”

In conclusion, ‘Life of pi’ movie referenced religion, culture, survival, death, family, friend, and communication with animals. In addition, the reason why the movie mention it that it is reason of Pi’s survival. Moreover, I realized the movie said that mind of people according the way of thinking. Thus, I made two questions and would like to ask the questions to my friends. The movie reminded me a lot of thinking.

Activity3: Justice or Revenge?

In the world, there are a lot of situations. The situations make people happy, sad, anxiety, fear, nervous, fright, loneliness, satisfaction, or comfortable. Likewise, people feel and do the work what they want in many different situations. Sometimes, people are standing at the parting of the ways of their life. People decide where they go between justice and revenge in some situations. However, in this world, sometimes, justice is not work in some situations. So, some people decide to revenge. Therefore, I prepare about revenge and made a collage about it.

First of all, there is a huge revenge that people sacrifice their life for revenge. The reason why I chose the images about Revenge post, which is American drama (middle of the collage) that a young woman returns to the Hamptons to exact revenge on the people who destroyed her life. In addition, first and last pictures that both women bring gun to revenge. Their revenge’s final purpose is killing the person or people who make(s) their revenge. Likewise, some people live to their revenge.

Second, there is a small revenge. People haze someone to their revenge. For example, second picture show a small revenge. The man is drilling a hole in car’s wheel to revenge. In addition, parody of 'The Devil Wears Prada.’ said that ‘Revenge Wears Prada the Devil’. I think it means that people disturb a person in his or her work in white class. In the other words, even though the people looks gentle such as wears Prada, they work behind to their revenge.

In conclusion, there are many situations in the world, so sometimes people choose justice or revenge in their situation. In revenge, there is a huge revenge and a small revenge. A huge revenge is that people use their whole life and commit a crime to their revenge. A small revenge is that people haze the person who make their revenge or disturb their work.

Activity1: Shakespeare

1. What was Shakespeare’s father’s name and what did he do for a living?
Shakespeare's father name is John Shakespeare who was born in 1531. John Shakespeare actually held numerous public offices including burgess, chamberlain, alderman and ultimately bailiff, which was the rough equivalent of mayor.  So he was well connected, well liked and respected in his community to keep moving up the political ladder.
There’s evidence that he was involved in usury – lending money with interest  - something on which his son would have something to say later in Merchant of Venice.  He was apparently good at it, as records have him associated with a loan of money that would today be worth more than $50k.   This, however, was highly illegal at the time, subject to fines equal to all of the loaned money, plus interest, fines, and still imprisonment on top of that. Risky business.

2. What was Shakespeare’s own theatre called? What happened to it?
Shakespeare's own theatre called Globe theatre. According to Shakespeare Online site,
"The Globe Theatre was constructed in 1599. It stood next to the Rose, on the south side of the Thames, and was the most elaborate and attractive theatre yet built. The Globe was designed and constructed for the Chamberlain's Men by Cuthbert Burbage, son of the Theatre's creator, James Burbage. The lease for the land on which the Globe stood was co-owned by Burbage and his brother Robert, and by a group of five actors -- Will Kempe, Augustine Phillips, John Heminge, Thomas Pope, and William Shakespeare. Much of Shakespeare's wealth came from his holdings in the Globe.
The Globe was the primary home of Shakespeare's acting company beginning in late 1599, and it is a possibility that As You Like It was written especially for the occasion. On June 29, 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, a misfired canon ball set the Globe's thatched roof on fire and the whole theatre was consumed. Swift reconstruction did take place and the Globe reopened to the public within a year, with the addition of a tiled roof. The new Globe theatre lasted until 1644, at which time it was demolished, and housing was quickly built where it once stood. Recent attempts have been made to re-create the Globe, and replicas have been built in Tokyo and in London."

3. At what time of day were plays usually performed? Why?
Plays were performed at three o'clock in the afternoon when they were performed in a circular open-air theater. There was not sufficient lighting to hold plays for large audiences indoors at night during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. They could and did perform for smaller audiences at night indoors at court, at people's homes, at public halls, and at indoor theatres like the Black friars. Because the audiences had to be smaller, indoor theatres' ticket prices were much higher than those at the large public outdoor theatres.

4. Name at least three of Shakespeare’s plays.
-Hamlet: Written between 1599 and 1601, this play is set in Denmark and recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle Claudius, who murdered the King, takes the throne and marries Hamlet’s mother. The play vividly charts the course of real and feigned madness — from overwhelming grief to seething rage — and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest and moral corruption. “Hamlet” is Shakespeare’s longest play and among the most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language. During his lifetime the play was one of Shakespeare’s most popular works and it still ranks high among his most performed, topping, for example, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s list since 1879. It has inspired writers from Goethe and Dickens to Joyce and Murdoch and has been described as “the world’s most filmed story after ‘Cinderella.’” The title role was almost certainly created for Richard Burbage, the leading tragedian of Shakespeare’s time. It’s arguably the greatest drama ever written and in the four hundred years since, it has been played by the greatest actors and sometimes actresses, of each successive age.
- Othello, The Moor of Venice: This tragedy is believed to have been written in approximately 1603. The work revolves around four central characters: Othello, his wife Desdemona, his lieutenant Cassio and his trusted advisor Iago. Attesting to its enduring popularity, the play appeared in seven editions between 1622 and 1705. Because of its varied themes — racism, love, jealousy and betrayal — it remains relevant to the present day and is often performed in professional and community theatres alike. The play has also been the basis for numerous operatic, film and literary adaptations.
-Macbeth: This is among the best-known of Shakespeare’s plays and is his shortest tragedy, believed to have been written between 1603 and 1606. It is frequently performed at both amateur and professional levels and has been adapted for opera, film, books, stage and screen. Often regarded as archetypal, the play tells of the dangers of the lust for power and the betrayal of friends. For the plot Shakespeare drew loosely on the historical account of “King Macbeth of Scotland” by Raphael Holinshed and that by the Scottish philosopher Hector Boece. There are many superstitions centred on the belief the play is somehow “cursed” and many actors will not mention the name of the play aloud, referring to it instead as “The Scottish Play.”
-Romeo and Juliet: This play is an early tragedy (and likely Shakespeare’s first) about two teenage “star-cross’d lovers” whose “untimely deaths” ultimately unite their feuding households. The play has been highly praised by literary critics for its language and dramatic effect. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with “Hamlet” is one of his most frequently performed plays. Its influence is still seen today, with the two main characters being widely represented as archetypal young lovers. This is the singularly greatest romance ever written and has been continuously adapted to each generation in musicals, cinema and the theatre.

5. How did the plague affect the theatres in Shakespeare’s time?
In the Elizabethan era, medical technology of the twenty-first century did not exist. One of the most known affects of the bubonic plague in the Elizabethan era is the closure of theaters, specifically the Globe Theater. This affected Shakespeare severely, because since he had to close down his theaters, he never made any money. Because people were too sick and afraid to go see plays and operas, the theaters had to close down from lack of money. There wasn’t enough money to pay the actors with, sending them out into the cold. Also, the queen of the time, Queen Elizabeth, was terrified of catching the disease; in fact, she was so terrified that she went to what some would call extreme measures.

6. Who was the Queen who reigned during Shakespeare’s time? Describe her.
William Shakespeare, the great English playwright, poet and actor, was born in April 1564, and died on 23 April 1616.
The two monarchs whose lives coincided with his were: Queen Elizabeth I reigned from 17th November 1558 until her death on 24th March 1603. This was the Elizabethan Era, sometimes known as The Golden Age. King James I (who was also King James VI of Scotland) reigned in England from 24th March 1603 until his death on 27th March 1625. His reign is known as the Jacobean era, Jacob being an alternative forms of James.
Elizabeth I picture: http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://englishhistory.net/tudor/monarchs/eliz1-scrots.jpg&imgrefurl=http://englishhistory.net/tudor/monarchs/eliz1.html&h=495&w=370&sz=60&tbnid=zczSzuz-snRAiM:&tbnh=97&tbnw=73&zoom=1&usg=__IFuX2uNYttstNg3iaoKV5IPRiD0=&docid=bAkhxCYxuOrSFM&sa=X&ei=9QPbUZT2O4bcyQHcj4GQCg&ved=0CEIQ9QEwBg&dur=1472
Describe of Elizabeth’s life
Food: Varied according to status and wealth. It was prepared through spit roasting, baking, boiling, smoking, salting, and frying.
Socialization: Big cities where a lot of people lived. Suburbs of London had a lot of theaters and attracted people from all places.
City life, hygiene, and crime: Hygiene was bad because bathing was not simple; crimes were frequent, like high treason, spying, murder, and witchcraft. Houses were crammed together and streets were narrow.
Homes: High chimneys, thatched roofs, glass windows, symmetrical facades
Clothing: Clothes were dictated by wealthy. There were underclothes and over clothes.

7. What was Shakespeare’s wife’s name? What did he leave her in his will?
Shakespeare’s wife’s name is Anne Hathaway Facts. Anne was born in 1555 and lived in Shottery and Stratford-upon-Avon. In addition, she married November 1582 to William Shakespeare aged 26 and has three children (two daughters, one son) William.
Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway’s picture: http://love-of-history.tumblr.com/post/32352502943/this-is-anne-hathaway-the-wife-of-william
Shakespeare's will is famous because the only mention that Shakespeare specifically makes of his wife was to leave her his "second best bed"
"Second best bed" picture:http://www.literarygenius.info/william-shakespeare-last-will-testament.htm
This sounds terrible but is, however, understood that she would have had the right, through English Common Law, to one-third of his estate as well as residence for life at New Place.

8. What happened to Shakespeare’s son?
William Shakespeare’s son name is Hamnet. Little is known about the life of William Shakespeare's son Hamnet. He was raised in his grandfather's house predominantly by his mother Anne as his father's work in the theatre was based in London. There are no records that show that Hamnet Shakespeare ever attended a school although it was customary for a boy from Hamnet's background to have had an education. Neither of Hamnet's sisters had an education and neither of them were able to read or write. There were constant outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague, otherwise known as the Black Death or the Black Plague, during Elizabethan times and in 1596 Hamnet contracted the deadly disease and died at the age of eleven. Shakespeare's son Hamnet was buried in Stratford on August 11, 1596.

9. Shakespeare also wrote hundreds of sonnets. For what two people is he believed to have written them?
Not all of the sonnets that follow are written to the man, but it could be argued that, without the original impulse to write the first ones, no others would have been written. Sonnets 1-126 are addressed to the youth, if not directly so, at least by implication. Of the 28 that follow to the mistress, in three of them the youth is deeply implicated, so that only 25 out of more than 150 are addressed to the 'Dark Lady'. Even these could be regarded as supplementary to the main body, as they depict a less than ideal love in contrast to that which has already been amply shown to be divine in the preceding 126.

10. Who compiled Shakespeare’s plays into the collection known as the First Folio after his death? What plays are missing form the First Folio?
Shakespeare’s genius was not full appreciated until after his death in 1616. Seven years later, two of his fellow actors and closest friends, John Heminge and Henry Condell, decided to produce an authoritative collection of 36 of his plays. This was the First Folio.
For 10 years, Interpol had been watching for the reappearance of one of Britain's great literary treasures, a First Folio of Shakespeare's complete plays, printed soon after his death, worth around £15m.
Part of a Durham University collection, the work had been stolen in 1998, along with early handwritten manuscripts bearing an English translation of the New Testament and a fragment of a poem by Chaucer, from a public display charting the progress of English literature from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Backstory
The First Folio is the first published edition of the collected works of Shakespeare. It was published in 1623, seven years after the playwright's death. The folio includes 36 plays, 18 of which, including Macbeth, had never been printed before. Without the First Folio many of Shakespeare's plays would probably have been lost forever, earning it the title of, "the most important work in the English language". The plays were collected by Shakespeare's friends and fellow actors John Heminge and Henry Condell, and were printed by Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount. About 1,000 copies of the First Folio were published, roughly a quarter of which have survived into the present day. On its publication, the folio sold for £1. It now has an estimated value of £15m.

Activity 4: Censorship and Modern Media (V for Vendetta)

-      - In what ways does the government in the film use censorship, thought control, propaganda, and media manipulation to control its citizens?

In the film, 'V for Vendetta,' the government uses censorship, thought control, propaganda and media manipulation to control its citizens in many different ways.
First of all, all of the television programs are run by the government and everything is taped so that no one could air anything live. The government reports manufactured and untrue news through BTN, a TV station. For example, when V destroys the 'Old Bailey', the news says that the 'Old Bailey' has been demolished. In addition, when V hijacks the governmental broadcast and sends his video message to all the people in the state, the news calls V a terrorist and reports that V has been killed by police even though V is still alive. In addition, video cameras are everywhere and the government posts ‘Thought. Unity. Unity. Thought. Faith.' words on the streets.
Second, the government bans blacklist and censors the goods, art, and food. For example, butter is only available to high-up government personnel. Moreover, religious books like the Koran are no longer allowed as well as several pictures and art pieces. Flowers are extinct like the Scarlett Carson.
In conclusion, the government uses censorship, thought control, propaganda and media manipulation to control its citizens both physically and mentally.  The government uses TV programs, word posts, and banning of the items. Therefore, the government has the citizens contained in its boundary.

- What elements of the film are similar to events that have occurred historically in or the present?

The background of 'V for Vendetta' is a society being run by a totalitarian rule. Thus, a government is present that controls the lives of the citizens and defines how the society should be run. There are similar events like the film that has occurred both historically and in the present.
First, "Nazi Germany and the Third Reich are common names for Germany during the period from 1933 to 1945, when its government was controlled by Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist German Workers' Party, commonly known as the Nazi Party. Under Hitler's rule, Germany was transformed into a totalitarian state where nearly all aspects of life were controlled by the state" (Wikipedia, 2013). Likewise, during the era of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler controlled the citizens in many different ways. For example, the Nazi government controlled the media such as radio, art, racial attitude, and daily life of the citizens such as curfew hours.
Second, North Korea is a kind of totalitarian state at present. North Korea student studies only about the supreme leader of North Korea about how that leader has good done work under government's control. In addition, TV station is controlled by the government. For example, the news reports only about the leader and the country and it is done by the government. The government controls the citizens' appearance as well. For example, the citizens cannot wear clothing that is too revealing such as a miniskirt.

In conclusion, there are similar events with 'V for Vendetta' film in past and at present. From the past, Nazi Germany showed similar events of controlling the citizens. Moreover, North Korea is still controlling their citizen under one leader and the government centered on him. These two events are the typical events that exemplify the governments that control the citizens as illustrated in the film. Likewise, in the past or present, a government uses censorship, thought control, propaganda, and media manipulation to control citizens.

Activity 4: Censorship and Modern Media

These days, there are different kinds of censorship such as book banning, propaganda, and media manipulation. I researched ‘The Diary of a young girl’ by Anne Frank, which were banned in 1983 by the Alabama State Textbook Committee. The reason why the book were banned in USA is that even though this is the incredible story of an ever-hopeful and ever-wistful young girl who is eventually killed in the Holocaust, despite the girl incredibly horrible enemies and fate, this remarkable teenage girl still believes in “the basic goodness of mankind.”

In addition, I researched about propaganda. I thought North Korea has a lot of propaganda news, so I researched and found one of North Korea propaganda news. According to Jean H. Lee who is a journalist,
“PYONGYANG, North Korea: A framed poster on the wall of a kindergarten classroom shows bright-eyed children brandishing rifles and bayonets as they attack a hapless American soldier, his face bandaged and blood spurting from his mouth. "We love playing military games knocking down the American bastards," reads the slogan printed across the top. Another poster depicts an American with a noose around his neck. "Let's wipe out the U.S. imperialists," it instructs. For North Koreans, the systematic indoctrination of anti-Americanism starts as early as kindergarten and is as much a part of the curriculum as learning to count. Toy pistols, rifles and tanks sit lined up in neat rows on shelves. The school principal pulls out a dummy of an American soldier with a beaked nose and straw-colored hair and explains that the students beat him with batons or pelt him with stones – a favorite schoolyard game, she says.”
North Korea is the spreading of information to children.

Moreover, I researched about Media Manipulation. When people ordered food and ate it, people cannot believe the advertisement. Because when people saw the food picture and read the comment, it looks very delicious. For example, Tim Horton’s smoothie advertisement tells people that it is real fruit. However, the smoothie’s taste is like syrup. In addition, when LEGO advertise their product on TV, they used science fiction and the product is moving without people’s hands to looks interesting. Even though LEGO put ‘the product cannot move. And this is not real”, the font size is very small on TV.

Therefore, censorship has different types in the twenty-first century. Censorship is used many ways such as book banning, propaganda, and media manipulation.

Censorship assignment

Q1-I understood of censorship before the discussion is that a government control public communication in society. For example, a government controls speech, book, music, art, television, movie, and radio. Moreover, I thought a totalitarian government is a typical example of censorship. Because a totalitarian government is one that tries to control every aspect of life: how people spend every minute of their time even in private, who they can associate with, what they are allowed to say. Totalitarian government even tries to control what people think, and what they believe. Likewise, George Orwell’s ‘1984’ show a totalitarian. For example, ‘BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU’ means that the government is watching the citizen in ‘1984’. In addition, I thought that censorship has strength and weaknesses. In strength part, if a government controls cigarette and alcohol, citizen will be protected. In weaknesses part, each person has his or her own opinion; however, a government does not want to citizen talk about harmful and sensitive story to the government. Thus, sometimes, censorship is an exercise in power. A government is not trying to control people’s mind for some other purpose. A government just wants to exercise total power over people’s minds.

Q2-I did not change my idea about censorship through the in class discussion. Because the discussion was similar with my idea. However, I add some idea about censorship. I just thought social censorship; however, I started think about individual censorship like family censorship.

Assignment 2

I think the most important lessons that I have learned in school throughout my life is that Early Childhood Education program. I took an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program in George Brown College. There are several reasons why the course is important lessons to me. First, taking ECE program is one of my dreams, so my dream has finally come true. When I was a high-school student, I always thought about ECE program and tried to study in my high-school to take ECE program in college. Thus, when I took the program, I was so exciting. Second, I could learn about children in different ways in the college. I learned about psychology, culture, development, play, and physical of children in an ECE program. Finally, I have had experience working at the daycare centres in Canada. I took field placement course while I took an ECE program. First field placement was difficult because I could not speak English well and it was different between theory and practice. However, I enjoyed in the field placement. While I took the course, I could learn about children in practice.
I was expecting to learn from an ECE course that I would like to learn about children in different way. For example, I was expecting that I can learn about psychology, culture, development, play, and physical of children. Likewise, George Brown College taught me what I expected to learn about children from the course.
ECE course might benefit me in the future that it will be helpful to take a child studies in York University. Because an Early Childhood Education course are similar to a child studies course. In addition, ECE course will be helpful to teach children when I work in a kindergarten or day care centre.

Assignment1

I am Jeong Yeon Lee and I originate from the city of Seoul in South Korea. My English name is Eileen. I came to Canada to study because of the excellent training in Early Childhood Education (ECE). I studied Early Childhood Development program. When I took my placement, I learned and developed skills about Early Childhood Education.
When I was a high school student I came to enjoy nurturing children. I believe that I could teach them using innovative new approaches. I enjoy taking care of my two younger sisters. I enjoyed spending time with them because of those experiences leads me to become an Early Child Educator. I am fascinated by their pure ideas, their distinctive behaviors, and their developmental patterns, especially in relation to emotional development, self-expression, self-regulation, and empathy for others. I enjoy drawing and making creative toys with children. Taking care of my two younger sisters has required me to be responsible and observe them. Thus, I built a positive relationship with all families and children as I enhance my learning and development in my field placement. One of my Early Childhood Educator offered job for me, but I could not work in the day care centre because I have to take an English class. However, I sometimes do babysitting. I always think about children.
